E-mailing via Text Messages

So the interesting things you learn by doing nothing really other than clicking on random things on websites. Today’s find? E-mailing through text messages. How did I find it? Well the first thing was catching on to GeoURL which I found on Nathanael’s site. So I registered myself, set up that nifty tag in my tags section and then clicked on it to see who was around me. That led me to Steven’s site and the article he posted on e-mailing through text messages.

So enough of how I found out, here’s how to do it: (this is only tested on Cingular)

Send a text message to the provider’s gateway (for Cingular it is 121) and format the text like so:

name@email.com(Subject)Body of Message

Make sure that you don’t have any spaces between the address and the subject or the subject and the body, parantheses required.

Shame we can’t get that in Australia – if you’re just getting it now, then we might have that within 3 years … :-)

Almost all providers have a email gateways. I have seen info on it for 3 in Australia when searching.
      Who is your provider?

You just need to know the number to your email gateway. Alot of providers here in the states use 0000000000 as the number for the email gateway.

Most providers it’s an undocumented feature. It took me for ever to figure out how to include a subjectline. Austrilia has 3G networks and in the US we only have 2.5G. Australia is actually ahead of the curve when compared to the states.

Yeah, it’s not a matter of us just getting it, it’s just a matter of me just finding it and having a use for it. I’ve been using email for the longest time to send messages to my cell phone, I just didn’t really have a use to go the other way before.

Hmm yeah how useful could it be? I know I used to send emails back when I had a WAP/MMS phone, but not now. And the 3 network? ... ugh!

Mostly to blog from the phone if I feel like it, or more importantly to control my computer from my phone.

I had known about email gateways for a while. I didn’t know how to include a subject line. Wordpress has a feature that lets you post to your blog through email. It uses the subject line of the email as the title of the post.

It took me several days of searching to figure out how to include a subject line when using the email gateway. The email gateway was documented on Cingular’s website, but it did have any info on how to include a subject line.
